Our Sustainability Commitment
At Coodlie Park Eco Retreat, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Set across 500 acres of coastal mallee bushland on the West Coast of South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, we are committed to protecting the land, wildlife and naturally dark night sky that make Coodlie so special. Our goal is to operate responsibly, reduce our environmental impact and provide meaningful, nature-based experiences that encourage guests to connect with and care for the environment.

Protecting the Land and Wildlife.

We work to protect native vegetation, wildlife habitat and environmentally sensitive areas across the property.

Our approach includes supporting natural regeneration, undertaking revegetation activities and working with regional organisations on seed harvesting, planting and biodiversity projects. We also maintain firebreaks, manage vegetation responsibly and encourage guests to stay on designated roads, tracks and visitor areas.

Coodlie is home to a wide variety of native wildlife, including southern hairy-nosed wombats, kangaroos, emus, birds, reptiles and nocturnal species. Guests are encouraged to observe wildlife quietly, keep a safe distance and avoid feeding or disturbing animals.

Water Conservation

Water is a valuable resource in our remote, low-rainfall environment. We use water-efficient systems wherever practical and ask guests to help by taking shorter showers, reporting leaks and using water mindfully during their stay.

Our campground facilities are designed for low-impact, off-grid living, and guests are advised where they need to bring their own drinking water.
 

Waste Reduction

We aim to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by reusing, recycling and composting wherever possible.

At Camp Coodlie, guests have access to clearly marked recycling, composting and general waste facilities. Food scraps suitable for composting are processed through our compost bins and worm farms. We also reuse and repurpose materials throughout the property and avoid unnecessary single-use products and packaging where practical.

 

Off-Grid and Energy-Efficient Living

Camp Coodlie operates entirely off-grid using solar power, with minimal generator backup when required. Across the property, we use energy-efficient lighting and appliances where possible and encourage guests to switch off lights, heating, cooling and electrical equipment when they are not needed. Staying at Coodlie offers guests the opportunity to experience a simpler, more mindful way of living while enjoying the comfort and beauty of a remote natural setting.
 

Protecting Our Dark Sky

Coodlie Park is committed to protecting the exceptional natural night sky above our property. We minimise unnecessary lighting, avoid permanent general lighting within Camp Coodlie and encourage the use of red-light torches after dark. Guests are asked to turn lights off when they are not needed, close curtains and blinds at night and avoid bright white torches or unnecessary outdoor lighting. Reducing artificial light helps preserve the night sky for stargazing and protects nocturnal wildlife that relies on natural darkness.

Sustainable Tourism Experiences

Our tours and activities are designed to be low-impact, educational and connected to nature. Through our guided stargazing and nocturnal wildlife experiences, guests can learn about local ecosystems, native animals, the night sky and the importance of conservation. We aim to inspire visitors to leave with a greater appreciation of the environment and a stronger understanding of how everyday choices can help protect it.

 

Supporting Local

We support local and South Australian businesses, producers, tourism operators and artisans wherever possible. Our breakfast baskets, guest supplies and gift hampers include South Australian products, and we encourage guests to explore nearby towns, attractions and locally operated experiences. We also seek opportunities to engage regional contractors and participate in projects that support the Eyre Peninsula community.
 

Continuous Improvement

Sustainability is an ongoing journey.

We review our environmental practices twice each year and continue to look for ways to improve our energy use, water management, waste reduction, purchasing, land care and guest education. We are committed to being open about our progress and sharing our sustainability initiatives with guests, partners and the wider community.
